Legacy Log #001
Letting People In
July 3, 2026
For most of my life, I've been comfortable working behind the scenes. Part of that came from my career. When you work in technology and government, you learn quickly that not everything can be shared. Some work is confidential. Some projects stay behind closed doors.
Over time, I developed the habit of building quietly. So when people would tell me, "Let people know what you're building," I never really knew what that meant for me.
Now I do.
I'm building something.
Not just a book.
Not just music.
Not just a nonprofit.
I'm building a legacy.
Today reminded me why that matters.
I spent part of the day creating the project system that will help me finish the Founder's Edition of my book. As someone who's worked my way from Business Analyst to Scrum Master and now Product Owner, I understand the value of a good system.
But somewhere in the middle of building it, I caught myself.
I was spending more time improving the tool than improving the thing the tool was supposed to support.
That became today's lesson.
The Manuscript Is the Product
The manuscript is the product.
The project board exists to help finish the manuscript—not become the work itself.
That lesson doesn't just apply to writing.
It applies to life.
It's easy to spend hours organizing folders, tweaking dashboards, buying equipment, planning, preparing, and convincing ourselves we're making progress.
Sometimes we are.
Sometimes we're just polishing the toolbox.
The real work is picking up the hammer.
There was another moment today that reminded me why I need to keep building.
My dad asked me to recreate one of his insurance jingles. This time, instead of using an AI-generated singer, I used my own voice.
He loved it.
Then something unexpected happened.
He paid me.
Not once.
Twice.
One hundred dollars for each jingle.
My first producer's check.
The amount isn't what I'll remember.
The confirmation is.
It reminded me that God has a way of confirming your calling while you're still building it.
That moment gave me confidence to make another decision.
Opening the Workshop Door
I'm done hiding the process.
For years I thought working behind the scenes was where I was supposed to stay. I was always focused on doing the work, not talking about it.
But I've realized something.
Letting people see the journey isn't about seeking attention.
It's about creating opportunities for connection.
Someone may have an idea that helps.
Someone may need encouragement to keep building.
Someone may see themselves somewhere in this story and realize they aren't as far behind as they thought.
So this is the beginning.
Not just of a book.
Not just of a business.
Not just of a nonprofit.
This is the beginning of letting people inside the workshop.
You'll see the wins.
You'll see the setbacks.
You'll see the revisions.
You'll probably even see the moments where I argue with AI because it doesn't quite understand what I'm trying to build.
And that's okay.
Because one day, when the book is finished, we'll all be able to look back and see how it happened.
One decision.
One chapter.
One lesson.
One day at a time.
Legacy Lesson
Don't mistake building the workshop for building the dream. Tools matter. Systems matter. But they're only valuable if they help you do the work that God called you to do. Today I was reminded to keep the mission first, and let everything else serve it.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow it's back to the manuscript.
One chapter.
One sprint.
One beat at a time.
